Welcome to 2025. From all of us at Wickedfood Earth Farm and Country Cooking School we wish you a delicious year ahead. 2025 is quite a momentous year for the Wickedfood™ brand:
- We established the Wickedfood™ brand in 2000, 25 years ago;
- We moved permanently onto Wickedfood Earth Farm 15 years ago and set up Wickedfood Earth Country Cooking School. Our goal was to try and better understand the food chain, research more sustainable farming practises, and create a space where we could pass on the knowledge learned. Our work has been featured in most of the South African media including TV, print and radio;
- 10 years ago we received the Slow Food’s Food Heroes for “…. development of rare breeds and education on sustainable food and farming…..”, a path we continue down today.
Our path has not always been an easy one. From consumer resistance, to the slow down of the economy, reduced consumer spending and the still knock-on effects of COVID, that we will never fully recover from. We, and many other ethical small-scale food producers, are still literally living from hand to mouth, not knowing if we’ll be able to pay the next set of bills.
BUT there is a faint light at the end of the gloom. Our free-range pig breeding programme is gaining traction and a lot of positive attention. The programme is starting to become self-funding. Last year we processed over 1 000kg of pork. We bred close to 100 pigs during the year. Thank you to everyone who purchased our pork or pigs over the last year.
Our other big success story for 2024 has been our Sunday Lunch Programme. To raise funds for the day to day running costs, every 3rd Sunday we do a lunch based around our very special pork. Thank you to all who attended, looking forward to welcoming even more of you this year, see below for dates.
My appeal to all of you this year is to think local, support the little guy. They may not always get it 100% right, but they are doing it with passion. It’s not always convenient, but it will make a big difference to many of the food heroes and small producers around the country.
