Wickedfood Earth Farm – July update
Slow Food Farm Lunch,
Workshops and Produce Sales

It’s cold, proper cold on the farm in the mornings, a thick blanket of frost covers the ground, but quickly gets swallowed up as the sun’s rays appear. By midday, especially in the sun, its lovely. The cold is good, hopefully reducing the insect load for the coming planting season. As always lots going on. Although still in deep winter we’re hard at work planning for the spring and summer. planted our chilli and eggplant seed, so we can get an early crop. Our sows are all with boars, so that we’ll be able, once again be able to supply baby pigs for Xmas celebrations (and orders are starting to come in). Still got to get to the fruit trees to prune.
This past weekend we ran our annual introductory sausage and salami making workshop – fully subscribed. We had participants fly in from as far away as Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Hoedspruit and Durban. Next in the series will be our 2-day Advanced hands-on Workshop on sausage and salami scheduled for 23 to 25 August.
Then we go on the road for September visiting small towns and farming communities 8 venue tour around South Africa, sharing our passion for Charcuterie skills along the way, with our 2-day pork charcuterie workshop.
Other events planned on the farm for the next two months include our quarterly Slow Food Farm Tour and lunch (see below) and our one day Chemistry of Pasta Workshop.
And lastly we once again have a good selection of frozen meat, ready prepared winter soups and preserves to order for collection from the farm or our depot in Lonehill.

A Seasonal Celebration of Winter on Wickedfood Earth Farm
We invite you to step into winter with us at Wickedfood Earth Farm, for a very special Winter Farm Tour and Harvest Lunch. Earlier this year, we were recognised as the first accreditedSlow Food Farm in Southern Africa – a proud milestone that celebrates our commitment to sustainable farming, biodiversity, and ethical food systems.
In honour of this recognition, we open the farm each season for a guided tour and a long, generous lunch showcasing our seasonal produce. July is our deep winter harvest – rich, warming, and hearty – all grown, raised, and prepared on the farm.
You’ll get to see where your food comes from, meet the animals, walk the land, spend time with our farmer/chef, and taste what it means to eat with the seasons. It’s a celebration of community, flavour and integrity.
“The best food is the kind that tells a story – of place, of care, of purpose.”.
When: Saturday 26 July. Planned programme for the day:
- 10:30 – gates open;
- 11:00 to 12:00 – guided tour of Wickedfood Earth Farm;
- From 12:00 – tasting of farm products and buffet lunch incorporating seasonal farm-to-fork produce.
Cost: R295pp, children welcome, R150 per child under 6, please bear in mind this is a working farm with no “play” area, so no running around please, and no ball games etc.

The Slow Food Farm campaign aims to transform food systems by reconnecting agriculture with the environment, strengthening ties between farmers, food artisans, and communities. Rooted in agroecology, this movement promotes sustainable farming, equitable food distribution, responsible consumption, and environmental stewardship. Recognising the urgent need for change to the whole way we as consumers interact with our food producers, the farmer, the Slow Food Farm model advocates for a shift towards regenerative farming practises that prioritise sustainability and resilience. These are principles that we at Wickedfood Earth Farm have been advocating for the last 15 years. As far back as 2015, in recognition of the groundbreaking work that is being done on Wickedfood Earth Farm, Slow Food Johannesburg honoured Cilla and Mike with the 2015 Food Heroes Award for “development of rare breeds and education on sustainable food and farming.
